What Are Runic Symbols?

Runes are the letters of the runic alphabets used by ancient Germanic peoples from about the 2nd century AD. The Elder Futhark (ᚠᚢᚦᚨᚱᚲ) is the oldest form with 24 characters. The Younger Futhark reduced this to 16 characters and was used by the Vikings. These aren't decorative — they're a real writing system used for over 1,000 years.

Unicode encodes them in the Runic block (U+16A0–U+16FF), giving you access to 89 runic characters that work on modern devices.

ᚠ Elder Futhark (24 Runes)

The original Germanic runic alphabet, used from the 2nd to 8th century. Each rune has a name and meaning — ᚠ (Fehu) means "wealth", ᚢ (Uruz) means "aurochs/strength", ᚦ (Thurisaz) means "giant/thorn".

ᛏ Younger Futhark (16 Runes)

The Viking-age reduction of Elder Futhark. Used from the 9th century onward across Scandinavia. These are the runes you see on actual Viking runestones.

ᛠ Anglo-Saxon Runes

Extended runic alphabet used in England. Contains additional runes not found in the Nordic variants.

ᚁ Ogham Alphabet

An Early Medieval alphabet used primarily to write Old Irish. Ogham consists of strokes along a central line — it looks completely unlike any other writing system. Used from the 4th to 10th century, primarily on stone monuments in Ireland and Britain.
